We really have a lot of clay soil in Siskiyou County. It can make planting and landscaping a daunting chore. I’ve heard more than one time, “all you need to do is get some ’soil conditioner’ from Shasta Forest Products.”
I had never been to Shasta Forest Products and decided it was time to go check it out since I had recently heard rumor that they opened a garden center. They are located on Montague Rd and Philippe Lane in Montague (just outside of Yreka).
Their garden center is in its infancy, but appears to be primarily geared towards landscaping supplies (plants may be coming down the road). This makes a lot of sense since their main products are bark mulches - the finishing touch on most landscaping projects.
We had to check out they’re soil conditioner - a special blend of very fine bark, top soil and amendments. I’ve been told you can plant directly in it - although I don’t think it is officially recommended by the staff. It is a really nice consistency and I can see how this would amend clay soil very nicely or make a nice mulch for that matter, although they have a huge variety of bark mulch styles to choose from. They have topsoil and lava rock too.
The staff, Tammy and Jake, were super friendly and very proud to show off their new drive up window! What a clever idea! I really liked how clean and tidy the place was and how nice and helpful the staff were.
By the way they are having their grand opening next weekend. Looks like it’d be a good time to check them out if you haven’t already - free food and drinks - eeee:)
