Saturday morning we made a last minute decision to zip up to the Mt Shasta Lavender Farms. Our friend, Dunsmuir Dave recently wrote a great guest post about the Lavender Farm’s recent wine tasting event. It sounded like so much fun I had to see it for myself before the short season was gone! This will likely become an annual event for our family. Love this place!
Words and pictures do not do it justice. You really need to see it for yourself.
We took an alternate route home from the Lavender Farms and went into Little Shasta. This is a beautiful area. Little Shasta is rich in ranching history and absolutely picturesque.
Along the road we passed a stretch of fence that had all variety of shoes attached to it. It was the oddest thing! Had to stop and take pictures of course. Does anybody know the story here? A funny feeling comes over you when you see these shoes. It’s both funny, whimsical and eerie all at the same time.
Keep going and you will see the Little Shasta Cemetery. You may recognize many Siskiyou County names on the headstones. Like Dunsmuir Dave said, “the northern, agricultural area’s population is more entrenched – tending toward multi-generational families…” For you historic cemetery buffs, Little Shasta Cemetery is a classic!
Then on to LIttle Shasta School, which recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. I hear great things about this little country school.
And of course you can’t pass up the famous Little Shasta Church. It is fantastic! Although they don’t have regular weekly services at this church, they do have occasional services and of course, many weddings have taken place here.
When you are driving these back roads that lead from one ranch to another, you may have the occasional treat of seeing a real cowboy. This one was leading a small herd down the road. Slowed us down a bit, but so much fun to see!
One of the cool things about Siskiyou County is it’s size. You can drive and drive and drive…. the terrain and scenery will change dramatically and you never know what you might get to see. Gas prices are ridiculous so if you want to take a road trip without putting hundreds of miles on the car, try doing it close to home. We had such a fun afternoon!!
