New Traditions Dulcimers

Hey! A new shop in Yreka!! Yea!! Dan Daniels is an accomplished wood worker, craftsman, musician and pastor - quite a combination, huh?! AND he’s opened a very small shop at 327 W. Miner Street in Yreka called New Traditions Dulcimers and Wood Works. This little shop has a theme - it’s old timey bluegrass, folk, mission style fun!

The little voice inside me goes, “Eeeeee!!!!” whenever I see stringed instruments through a shop window! I’m no musician but for those who are, here’s a shop for you. As a matter of fact this is a shop for wanna be musicians too, because Dan offers lessons on guitar, banjo and dulcimer. His rates are crazy low and his teaching schedule has filled up quickly! Dan is an accomplished musician, touring throughout the country in the spring and summer and may even have a European tour in the works next year! Wow!

The wood items are handcrafted by Dan using local woods! So if you’re eco conscious you should pop in to check out the turned pens, bottle toppers, candle snuffers and darling little boxes. This stuff wasn’t made in Taiwan and no animals were harmed in their construction:) Then there’s the handmade soy candles - can you say, “pass the organic tofu and pour some more fair trade java”, because it’s all natural baby!

And finally the kicker! Besides all these things, Pastor Dan and his wife have another passion - it’s called Christmas in Appalachia. New Traditions Dulcimers will be collecting Christmas gifts for boys and girls in Eastern Kentucky. You may be thinking - “Why Kentucky?! How about Africa or Indonesia” Well, the children of Appalachia are the poorest of the poor in America. Their situation is complex and the dynamics are difficult to fully understand, but the bottom line is they are the kids that have gone beyond falling through the cracks - they’ve fallen through a chasm of poverty! They are far poorer than the poorest families in Siskiyou County and the Christmas gift they receive from a kind person living thousands of miles away means more to them than you could ever know!

Pastor Dan has not forgotten our local community, though. Yreka Christian Fellowship also delivers holiday meals to families in need right here at home.

So whether you are musical, green, humanitarian or are just looking for a great Christmas gift New Traditions Dulcimers is the place to go to fill the bill!

WE ARE SO LUCKY TO HAVE THIS MAN HERE!

I WANT TO LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR, DAN. I’LL BE IN.

Very cool. Hey, maybe Yreka will become an “artists colony”! :) We now have the art & frame shop, the new art gallery, now music, not to mention The Heartisans… 2 book stores, a jewelry store and flower shop. A coffee shop… who did I miss? This is excellent! Welcome New Traditions!

BTW, we went downtown last Friday night (evening, after 5:00) because we heard the stores would be open. Had pizza and walked around. Only a couple had any lights on, so we made sure we went in and looked. Only made one small purchase, but felt we should at least go in every business that was open! We planned on having coffee after, but the coffee shop was closed. I think it would be great if all the merchants participated!

Dan Daniels is a renaissance man of God. The web site visit to his shop impressed me. I am aware of his talents, gifts and passion for the people of our community. I pray he will be blessed in this endeavor. How does he have time to create all these amazing items? Wow!

amen

Bill - You SHOULD play guitar. We’ll see you at Open Mic night in no time!

Claudia - An artists colony?! What a concept! I could totally happen! The ‘open late on Friday night’ thing seems to have been pushed back a bit. Hang in there. I’m glad you went downtown. I’m heading down this Friday to check it out.

Patty - thanks for the comments! And I’m sure Dan appreciates your prayers!

Claudia and I went down to visit the shop and Dan yesterday. He does beautiful work and is an outstanding craftsmen. His shop has a great feel. Dan, we had a good talk and its nice to have an other history person in Yreka.

ok, i did it. i went in and bought a guitar. while i was in there, a very nice woman came in to look at dulcimers as a gift for her daughter. dan got one of his beautifully crafted instruments off of display, and after watching him and hearing the sound, i was tempted to git one of those, too. anyway, i believe the woman purchased one…FOR HERSELF!!! The soy candles he makes smell yummy, and the craftsmanship of his wood working you should see. see ya at open mic!
